Gary Schocker Master Classes

For many years, I studied flute and piano with flutist, pianist and composer Gary Schocker in New York City. When he asked me to run his master classes, I wanted them to be in the beautiful Hudson Valley. I have loved the atmosphere of Holy Cross Monastery since my first visit there, and we settled on this bucolic location on the Hudson River for flute classes for our first class, in 2002. Since then, we have had at least two every year.

Master classes have taken place at the Holy Cross retreat house in West Park, New York. Each class includes a recital by Mr. Schocker, as well as daily master classes, a workshop of Alexander Technique, yoga, duets with Mr. Schocker, ensemble playing, and the opportunity to perform a piece by Mr. Schocker with him playing the piano! Meals are prepared by a graduate of the famed Culinary Institute of America, and all participants have a private room.

Over the years, we have had wonderful musical experiences with hundreds of students. Gary Schocker has a positive, encouraging approach and the class is non-competitive, so that each student may focus on bettering his or her own playing.

Classes in 2020 are:

Weekend Flute Retreat, January 31-February 2, 2020

Summer Master Class, July 9-14, 2020 (stay tuned for updates on our new, air-conditioned location for the summer class!)

We will publish a link for online payments here soon.
